Brigadier General Traian T. Maghercă

was born in Pașcani, Romania, on 26th June 1978.
Following his graduation from the military high school in 1997, and from the Land Forces Academy in 2001, 2nd Lieutenant Maghercă completed the Basic Infantry Officer Course in 2002 and he was assigned as infantry platoon leader in the 30th Guard Regiment then in 2003 to 30th Mountain Battalion within the 2nd Mountain Brigade "SARMIZEGETUSA" where, until 2007, he commanded a mortar then a reconnaissance platoon, and was appointed as a deputy company commander.

During his assignment to the 30th Mountain Battalion "DRAGOSLAVELE", in 2005 he was deployed to Kosovo within the KFOR mission as an infantry company deputy commander. In 2007 he assumed the command of a mountain infantry company of the 30th Mountain Battalion.

In 2009, while serving as company commander, he deployed for the second time to Afghanistan. Brigadier General Maghercă's operational deployments include two additional tours in Afghanistan in 2011 as a staff officer in Romanian National Command Element and in 2017, as a staff officer whithin Resolute Support Mission HQ.

Between 2010-2016 Brigadier General Maghercă has had multiple command and staff positions in the 30th Guard Brigade, and in 2017 he was appointed battalion commander for 1st Battalion/30th Guard Brigade. Among other assignments, Brigadier General Maghercă was appointed, between 2020 - 2022, as the head of the Training and Exercises Branch of the ROU Joint Forces Command. Brigadier General Maghercă served as the deputy commander of the 282nd Armored Brigade since 2022 until 2023 when he assumed the command of 2nd Mountain Brigade „SARMIZEGETUSA”. He was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General on December 2024.

In addition to the Strategic Leadership Postgraduate Course and the Capstone Course, he holds a master’s degree in Army Combined Arms Leadership, and he is a graduate of the Comprehensive Operational Level Planning Course, as well as of several other ROU Army career and NATO training courses. He also completed his PhD in Military Science at the Romanian National Defense University, earning the title of Doctor in Military Science.

His personal awards include the ROU Defense Staff Emblem of Honor, the ROU Joint Forces Command Emblem of Honor, the ROU Land Forces Headquarters Emblem of Honor, the US Army Commendation Medal, as well as numerous other national and international decorations and awards. Brigadier General Maghercă and his wife, Elena, have been married for more than 20 years and have one son.

Brigadier General Maghercă assumed the position of COS EUFOR Althea on 14th May 2026.
