On 12 January 2014, the State Secretary of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia Ministry of Defence, Mr Sasho Stefanovski, visited Monument Park in Camp Butmir to remember the 6th anniversary of the helicopter crash, where 11 members of the Macedonian contingent of EUFOR died. EUFOR formed a Guard of Honour to pay their respects to those who lost their lives.
Mr Sasho also attended an office call with Commander EUFOR, Major General Dieter Heidecker, and visited the Camp Butmir Medical Centre, which is staffed by Macedonian Armed Forces personnel.
On 28 November 2013 the Chief of Staff of EUFOR, Brigadier General József Szpisják attended the 8th birthday celebration of the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina (AF BiH) in Rajlovac barracks.
The event started with the formation of troops which took place in the presence of the current BiH Presidency chair, President Komšić, the Minister of Defence, Zekerijah Osmić, his deputy for politics and plans, Mrs. Marina Pendeš, the Chief of the Joint Staff, Major General Anto Jeleč, together with his deputies, Brigadier Generals Mirko Tepšić and Senad Mašović.
On 11 November 2013 US Brigadier General Merle Hart, the Commander of NATO Headquarters Sarajevo (NHQ Sa), invited all members of NHQ Sa and EUFOR to take part in a Veterans Day ceremony at the Monument Park inside Camp BUTMIR. During his address, General Hart emphasized that we should never forget all that our veterans have sacrificed their lives in order to protect our freedoms. Despite the ever increasing sophistication of weaponry, aircraft, ships and cyber technologies; the greatest asset for all our militaries is the men and women that serve within them.
On 4 November 13 the first module of the latest Geographical Services course commenced, with an opening ceremony and welcoming remarks from the Chief of Training in EUFOR, Lt Col Johan Bouhuys. The ceremony was also attended by representatives from the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina (AF BiH), EUFOR, and NATO CIS Advisor, Major Erdem Onk. The course took place at the Rajlovac barracks under the responsibility of the AF BiH with a total of 12 trainees taking part.
On 10 October 2013 the Operation Commander of the EUFOR Althea mission and Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe (DSACEUR), General Sir Richard Shirreff was the guest of honour during EUFORs Chilean Contingent 10th Anniversary of operations in BiH Ceremony.
This event not only marked the successful participation of Chilean soldiers in Operation Althea since 2003, but also the end of a six month tour of duty for the soon departing members of the 20th rotation of soldiers. These Officers and Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) are manning staff positions within the EUFOR Headquarters in SARAJEVO and a Liaison and Observation Team (LOT) House in BANJA LUKA.
On 17 Sep 13 The Commanders of EUFOR and NATO attended the 16th anniversary of the crash of a helicopter with a Russian crew carrying 12 UN and OHR members.
The commemoration was marked at the Prokoško Lake near Fojnica, where the helicopter crashed due to poor visibility and bad weather.
“We are here today to honour the memory of twelve men who died while carrying out their duties as members of the international peace mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). 16 years after the tragic event, …although there is a significant progress, the vision of BiH as the prosperous and inclusive democracy in the heart of Europe has not still became reality.”, said the High Representative Valentin Inzko who emphasized that those people had laid their lives for a better future for Bosnia and Herzegovina.
