Major General Johann Luif, from the Austrian Army assumes command of the European Union Forces in Bosnia And Herzegovina on 17 December 2014. General Johann Luif was born on the 12 July 1959 in Eisenstadt, Austria. He is married and has a son (29) and a daughter (27).
After graduating from the Military Academy in 1981 he served as an Officer in the Infantry Regiment 12 in different positions. From 1988 – 1991 he attended the 12th General Staff Course at the Austrian National Defence Academy and gained a Master’s Degree in Political Science.
He held a number of duties and military service positions which included being the G3/Military Command of Burgenland and the Chief Armament within the Armament Planning Division and the Deputy Chief Defence Planning Division in the Austrian Ministry of Defence.
In 1998-1999 General Luif attended the General Staff Course in Switzerland fol- lowed by a deployment as the National Contingent Commander of the Austrian Armed Forces in Kosovo in 2000. Following his mission abroad he served as the Deputy Chief of Defence Planning in the Ministry of Defence of Austria until 2003. Since 2003 he has held the position of the Commanding General of the Burgen- land, the most eastern province of Austria.
From 2011 to 2012 he assumed the position of the Deputy Commander KFOR (Kosovo Forces).
