Spanish Commemoration Ceremony of Fallen Soldiers
On 15th May 2010 a remembrance ceremony for Spanish soldiers who had given their lives to the mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina, was held in the “Spanish Square,” Mostar.
The ceremony commenced at 12:00h, under heavy rain, and was presided over by the Spanish Ambassador, His Excellency Alejandro Alvargonzález. EUFOR HQ was represented by COM EUFOR, Major General Bernhard Bair. Both officials were formally received by the Multinational Battalion Commander Lt Col José M. Estévez and the event was further attended by civil and local dignitaries such as the mayor of Mostar. Mr Ljubo Beslic and the Chairman of the Herzegovina-Neretava Cantonal Government Mr Srecko Boras.
The military honour guard comprised a mixed Company of Spanish Marines and Guardia Civil who sang “La Muerte no es el Final” whilst the names of the 23 Spanish fallen were read out. General Bair and His Excellency Alvargonzález laid wreaths on the commemorative plaque.
After concluding the ceremony, the Spanish Ambassador highlighted the important work carried out by soldiers in Bosnia and Herzegovina and toast was made for His Majesty the King of Spain.
