Major General Dieter Heidecker assumed command of the EU Force in Bosnia and Herzegovina Operation ALTHEA on 3rd December 2012.

Major General Dieter Heidecker was born on February 6th 1954 in KufsteinlTirol.
There he attended Grammar School and High School, the latter with a focus on modern languages.
After graduation he was drafted as a conscript and volunteered for the Reserve Officers Training at the Training Regiment 8 in Glasenbach/Salzburg.
Between 1976 and 1979 MajGen Heidecker attended the Professional Officers education at the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt as an infantry officer. He got his commission in 1979 and was transferred to the Infantry Battalion 21. There he held postings as a Platoon Commander, Commander of the 1 st (Alpine Specialist) Company and Planning and Training Officer (S3) in the Battalion HQ.
During this period he also had the opportunity to gather international experience, especially by attending Infantry related courses in France and serving with the United Nations. He also had an appointment as a Training Officer at the Theresian Military Academy.
From 1985 to 1988 he was a student of the 11 th General Staff Course at the National Defence
Academy in Vienna. He graduated in 1988 having especially elaborated on “Defensive Operations in Built-up Areas” and “Inspection and Controlling in the Austrian Armed Forces”. He found his first appointment as a General Staff Officer at the Theresian Military Academy.
While being the Chief-Training Officer for Tactics there from 1989 to 1991, MajGen Heidecker was additionally appointed Chief of Staff of a Reserve Division.
In the years 1991 and 1992 he was the Commanding Officer of the Army Logistical Regiment with the additional task to conduct special operational tests.
From 1992 to 1993 he was a student at the “Ecole Superieur de Guerre Interarmees” and the .Cours Superieur Interarmees” in Paris, where he graduated with the “Brevet d’ Etudes Militaires Superieures”.
As a part of these courses he underwent a practical training in an Airborne Regiment of the French Marines. Being Chief of Staff of the 4th Mechanised Infantry Brigade in Linz/Ebelsberg from 1993 to 1995 he led this unit during a 10 months period due to a long-term absence of the Brigade Commander. In 1995 MajGen Heidecker was appointed the first Austrian Military Attache to the Western European Union in Brussels and Deputy Defence Attache for Belgium. During this time he took part in all planning processes of the WEU and the first exercise CRISEX I. He was also student in an European and a national session of the IHEDN (Institut des Hautes Etudes de la Defense) in Paris and Strasbourg during that period.
From 1997 to 2002 MajGen Heidecker was the Austrian Defence Attache for France, Tunisia, Morocco and Luxemburg with residence in Paris.
Being Deputy Commanding General of the Austrian Land Forces in the years 2002 to 2006 he was also responsible for the Inspection within the Austrian Land Forces.
In 2005 he attended the General Flag Officers and Ambassadors Course at the NATO Defence
College in Rome. On September 1, 2006 MajGen Heidecker was appointed Deputy Commanding General of the Austrian Armed Forces.
He holds a Master of Philosophy from the University of Vienna. His favourite sports are alpinism including skiing as well as parachuting and jogging. He spends his private time with modern Austrian history and the history of the region of his origin. Besides his mother tongue MajGen Heidecker speaks French and English.
